Towns - Pakefield

Just a short walking distance south of Lowestoft you will find the quiet unspoilt village of Pakefield. This small village boasts a thriving community complete with shops, art gallery and a variety of public houses.

Pakefield beach

Pakefield, like many other coastal settlements, started off well inland but over the centuries has become a victim to the North Sea. But at the moment, as the sea deposits material along the coast, the beach is starting to slowly build up. This has resulted in protecting the village from any further erosion, as well as creating a sandy beach scattered with shingle below low grassy cliffs, just perfect for a stroll.

Did you know? - Pakefield was once part of the local tram service to Lowestoft, but in the 1930s this service was withdrawn due to the increase in cars on the regions roads.

Taking its name from Pacca's or Pagga's field after a local land owner of the time, the village features a distinctive church, All Saints and St. Margaret. Long ago the church was split as it used to serve two separate parishes, but now after an eventful history, which includes being bombed in the 2nd World War, the churches share a tower and are one. Pay a visit to the church and you may well see the churches' two lawn mowers in action, namely two sheep!

Did you know? - In 1801 the population of the village was just 282, that's just 4.1% of the total recorded in 2000.
